Elk are native to Pennsylvania, but the herd became almost extinct in 1877 due to over hunting. The current Pennsylvania elk herd is of the Rocky Mountain breed. They were brought into Pennsylvania by the Game Commission in between 1913-1926 and have since expanded their range into seven counties in Northern Pennsylvania.

The elk herd of Majestic are also of the Rocky Mountain breed, and are privately owned. Majestic's Elk bulls are some of the largest antlered bulls on the east coast.

Elk bulls grow their antlers at a rate of approximately one inch a day, and shed their antlers annually in early spring. An elk bull can weigh as much as 1,000 pounds, and can stand 50"-60" high at the shoulder. Elk bulls also engage in ritualized mating behaviors during the rut including posturing, antler sparring, and bugling, to show their dominance over other males. Elk bulls have two ivory teeth located in their upper jaw, which enables them to make the bugling sound. Their teeth are pure ivory and the only legal ivory available in North America.

Elk Cows can weigh up to 500 lbs. and can stand 48" high at the shoulder. They are cable of calving once a year. A calve when born can weigh approximately 33-35 pounds.

The distinctive bugling of the bull elk can be heard during rut, which normally last from August into late fall. Many of our guests stay at the lodge during these months just so they can hear the chorus ring through mountain valleys.

Red deer are native of Europe. Currently at Majestic we only have the red stag being the male of the red deer. Red stag are distinguished by the "cup" or "crown" which grows in excess of the fourth or fifth tine of the antler. Red Stag can weigh as much as 530 lbs. and stand up to 47" high at the shoulder. Red stag make a roaring sound much deeper in tone than the elk during the rut season.

Buffalo are native to North America and once roamed the entire continent. Many of the roads used today through out the nation were carved out by herds of buffalo moving from area to area to their feeding grounds.
Buffalo stand some 5 to 6.5 feet tall at the shoulder, and can tip the scales at over a ton. Despite their massive size, bison are quick on their feet. When the need arises they can run at speeds up to 40 miles an hour. Both bulls and cows sport curved, sharp horns that may grow to be two feet long.
